Randy Kinder; Class of 1993
Randy first donned a football helmet in the summer before his freshman year (before the Junior Trojan program), and learned the East Lansing system as an underclassman under Coaches Holcomb and Gibbs. As a junior, on Legendary Coach Jeff Smith’s 1991 Class A State Championship team, Randy led the team in rushing as part of a talented offensive backfield that included Seniors Ken Tyson & Tommy Sudduth.
As a senior, Randy served as a tri-Captain with Rufus Jackson and Nathaniel Eyde, and the trio led the team back into the MHSAA playoffs falling just short of the Silverdome in the Class A Semi-Final. His senior rushing total of 2,464 yards stood as an ELHS record until broken by Isaac Harper in 2007. Randy proudly received consensus All Area, All State and All American recognition after the season on behalf of the team’s success and his individual accomplishments.
Randy accepted a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame and played four years for College Football Hall of fame Coach Lou Holtz. He had the great fortune to play as a freshman on a team that finished consensus #2 in the country (Pre-BCS) and twice led his team in rushing (1994, 1995). Randy still stands as Notre Dame’s # 9 all-time career rusher with 2,295 yards. He graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in American Studies.
After college, Randy had a brief but exciting NFL career with the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles. Randy had the opportunity to play for legendary coaches Mike Holmgren, Fritz Shurmur and Ray Rhodes, and played with Hall of Famer Reggie White and future Hall of Famer Brett Favre among many other great players. In recognition of his Special Teams play, he was named to The Sporting News’ All Rookie Team.

Randy joined the East Lansing Track team as a freshman under the tutelage of Coach Smith, and competing with a very enthusiastic group of upper classmen, quickly began to reach his potential. While falling short of a team State Championship, Randy won individual State Championships in the 200 and 400 meter dashes as a Junior (he finished 2nd to East Kentwood’s Brad Fields in the 100meter dash).
As a senior, Randy was undefeated in individual races save for a single loss to Sexton’s Octavius Long in the 100 meter dash at the Honor Roll Track Meet. His chances at the State Championship meet were dashed with a pulled hamstring during time trials. Randy retains records at ELHS and also at the Honor Roll Meet.
As a freshman, in his sole year running track at Notre Dame, Randy set the school’s still standing Indoor record with a 21.1 second 200 meter dash and received All America honors for his 200 performance at the Indoor National Championship that season.
Randy and his wife Erin (Blake) live in Washington, DC where he works for the AFL-CIO Investment Trust Corporation and she works for Fairfax County Public Schools.
