Christie Cleland Hursey; Class of 1992

Picture
Christie Cleland Hursey was very fortunate to be able to compete in three sports each at both East Lansing High School and Albion College.  She played key positions in each of the team sports, requiring a dedication to her teams and unselfish play.  Christie earned 11 varsity letters in high school (playing basketball and soccer for four years each and volleyball for three years) and 12 varsity letters in college (basketball, soccer and softball each for four years).  Over her career, Christie received many honors, including for high school:  All-League in basketball and volleyball; All-Area in soccer and All-State Honorable Mention in all three sports.  Christie was Captain of seven teams at ELHS.  Christie still holds 3 career records in basketball for assists in a game, season and career and she was the first female “Girls Basketball Player of the Year” for the Capital Area Conference.

At Albion College, Christie earned 1st Team All-MIAA Conference six times, including four in soccer.  She was the conference MVP in soccer as a senior in 1996.  During her senior year, Christie was named 1st Team All-Conference in all three sports, the first female athlete in the 108 year history of the MIAA to be so honored.  Christie was Captain of eight teams at Albion College.  In addition, she did not ignore her academics, graduating with honors and being named Academic All-America in both soccer and softball.  Christie was inducted into the Albion College Hall of Fame in 2007.

Christie has stayed active in sports since college, coaching three sports at Port Huron and Mason High Schools, her two teaching positions since college.  Since the birth of her children, Andrew and Rachel Hursey, Christie has cut back to coaching varsity girls soccer at Mason High School and is in charge of the Girls Letter Club.  She also volunteers with Special Olympics, Walk for Warmth, Bennett Woods School and helps coach youth soccer with her children.  Christie and husband Tyler & two children live in Okemos.
