Andrew Wells; Class of 1976

Andrew Wells is an experienced, dedicated educator and administrator in the East Lansing School District. He is a product of the East Lansing school system, having attended Hannah Middle School and graduated from East Lansing High School. He holds BS, MA and Education Specialist Degrees from Michigan State University.
He has served the District as a committed, loyal employee for many years and in many roles. He began his career as a District Community Liaison Officer (support for at risk high school students) and progressed to East Lansing High School Coach, Athletic Director, High School Associate Principal, Principal of Whitehills, and currently has the additional assignment of Principal at Glencairn Elementary. His administrative and leadership abilities have gained him the respect of the Superintendent, School Board Members, Students, Parents and teachers throughout the District.
In addition to his full time formal duties Andrew has served the East Lansing School District in many other ways. He has served as a student mentor at East Lansing High School coached girls and boys basketball and track, served on various committees including Administration Representative for Labor Relations and numerous interview/hiring committees; East Lansing High School representative to the City of East Lansing for the Youth Action Team, District representative to the City of East Lansing in the hiring process for Chief of Police, the strategic planning committee and the East Lansing Education Foundation steering committee, and a member of the East Lansing School District Achievement Gap Task Force.
Andrew was identified as a student athlete, and leader of others by his Hannah Middle School physical education teacher, Fred Waters. Mr. Waters served as a mentor for Andrew and he helped form the foundation of Andrew’s success for the future. Mr. Wells also played as a Jr. Trojan Athletic during his during his early pre high school years. In that sense, he has indeed been shaped, developed and prepared for success by the East Lansing community.
His many awards began with the numerous plaudits earned during his East Lansing High School athletic career where he received three varsity letters in Basketball and four in Track And Field. He was MVP two years in both sports. He received all state honors, and was select to the all conference teams as a varsity athlete. He set the ELHS freshman record in the high jump in 1972, and is currently unbroken today, held school records in the high and low hurdles for at least ten years and also held the varsity high jump record for a brief period. He was Lansing State Journal Honor Roll Champion in the high hurdles and low hurdles and the high jump. He was also the conference champion in the high jump, low and high hurdles. He was Captain of the Basketball and Track Teams for 2 years. He was selected as a member of the All Area Dream Team in Basketball in his Junior and Senior years with other notables as Ervin “Magic” Johnson and Jay Vincent. He was also selected to play in the State of Michigan Roundball Classic his senior year.
His collegiate career was equally stellar. As a scholarship basketball player at Eastern Michigan University, and at Michigan State University as an outstanding Track Athlete, he earned varsity letters. He earned All Big Ten honors in the Hurdles and the High Jump. He was Co-Captain of the MSU Track Team during his senior year.
Recognition continued during his professional career with nomination for the Regional Athletic Director of the Year. His honors also include the East Lansing School District Work Place Excellence Award. He was recently recognized by the Whitehills and Glencairn parent associations for his dedication to serving in the capacity of principal of both buildings.
Mr. Wells maintains his professional associations with memberships in professional organizations including the Alliance of Black Educators, Member of the ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner.
Mr. Wells contributes to excellence in the community by previously volunteering for organizations including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Black Child and Family Institute. He also served as a motivational speaker at the Lansing area Phi Beta Kappa Black Male conference and has served as a guest lecturer at Michigan State University in the Residence College of Arts and Humanities (RCAH).
Andrew Wells is married to Daphne and is the father of three children, Andrew II, Brianna and Kaylie and is an active member of Abundant Grace Faith Church.
